For my college senior capstone project, I created a children’s book based on my research on cuteness aggression and the study of anthropomorphism and how we attribute human characteristics to nonhuman things in order to form a greater connection to them.

Grunge bear
This design book was made for a project that called for students to create a sub brand for a retail store. I chose Build-a-Bear and combined it with the aesthetic from the grunge subculture because its gritty, urban, punk, and worn-out style contrasts with the cutesy, neat, pastel style of the toy brand. Musicians like the band Nirvana, the staple of grunge inspired the plaid bear clothes, angel-decorated stuffing machine, and crowd-surfing concept art. The design book from the brand wishes to capture a teenage demographic because grunge’s themes of boldness, rebellion, and individualism emerge in teenagers and sometimes develop into adulthood.

Rescue-rant
This concept for a seasonal magazine is aimed at helping struggling restaurants around America and promoting them. This specific issue focuses on silver diners, aka retro-style restaurants. The magazine includes pages containing Table of Contents and a two-spread article on one restaurant’s story. The aesthetic for the entire magazine changes depending on the type of restaurant that is mainly promoted. If the magazine were to promote a Mediterranean restaurant, instead of giant burgers, milkshakes, and pastel color schemes, there would be natural tones and organic décor. What stays consistent is the title of the magazine and some font choices in the text and same structural skeleton.

Budding Garden Podcast
The brand identity is created for a podcast about sharing tips for amateurs who want to start gardening. The podcast is meant to be listened to on the phone which explains why there are mockups of what ads and audio would look like on the screen. There are also inclusions in the project of a style guide, merchandise, and logo variations that contain gardening themes and gnomes. Very fun.
